The fluorescent phase-out

Why are commercial buildings switching off fluorescent now?

Because the supply is ending, not because of a trend. Under the Minamata Convention on Mercury, Canada prohibited the manufacture and import of straight T5, T8 and T12 fluorescent tubes after December 31, 2025. A limited replacement-lamp window runs to December 31, 2027, and the sale of replacement lamps is prohibited from January 1, 2030. Existing fixtures still work, but every year the lamps that feed them get scarcer and dearer. Retrofitting on your own schedule costs less than doing it the week a tube fails and none can be found.

Retrofits take time to scope, approve and install, so the practical date to start is well before this. Planned work costs less than emergency work.

A commercial or warehouse LED retrofit typically cuts lighting energy 50 to 70 percent. Swap a 400W metal halide high bay for a 150W LED unit and that fixture's draw falls by about two thirds, with cleaner and more even light across the floor. Available rebates cut the upfront cost further, which shortens the payback.

Mission and parts of the Fraser Valley sit in a capacity-constrained part of the grid, where some properties qualify for support that is not offered everywhere. Eligibility depends on the specific utility feeder serving your address, so we confirm in writing what your property qualifies for and handle the application paperwork.
Do I have to replace my T8 or T12 tubes right now?
Not immediately. Existing fixtures can run on remaining lamp stock, but new T8 and T12 tubes can no longer be manufactured or imported into Canada as of December 31, 2025, so replacement lamps get scarcer and more expensive until the sales ban on January 1, 2030. Retrofitting to LED now locks in the energy savings and avoids a future supply gap.
